Celebrity Appearances

Mary plays a leading and rather fleshly role in the novel and film, The Last Temptation of Christ. In Jesus Christ Superstar, she gets to sing, "I don't know how to love him". Mary was also played by Anne Bancroft in Zefferelli's made-for-TV film, Jesus of Nazareth.

Kris Kristofferson's song, Magdalene, imagines her completely changed by Jesus and then left alone. Lenny Kravitz and Procul Harem also have songs named after her. In Tori Amos's song, Talula, Mary weaves while saying someting about blood senators. The metaphysical poet Richard Crashaw wrote a 30-verse poem about her tears.
